Content Guidelines

The theme of fairytales refers to the actual written tales from authors such as the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Perrault. These are a few examples of fairytales that contributors will be able to draw inspiration from to create their piece:Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp │ Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves │ Alice in Wonderland │ Beauty and the Beast │ The Blue Bird │ The Canary Prince │ Cinderella │ The Emperor's New Clothes │ The Fairy │ The Fiend │ The Glass Coffin │ Goldilocks and The Three Bears │ Hans in Luck │ Hansel and Gretal │ The Little Mermaid │ Momotaro │ The Nightingale │ Pinocchio │ The Snow Queen │ The Story of the Yura │ Thumbelina │ The Ugly DucklingContributors are not limited to the fairytales that are listed here, your own suggestions will always be welcomed. The fairytales chosen do not need to be limited to any one country or region. The mods warmly welcome tales from all over the world.Contributors are definitely allowed to place their own twist on these classics. Take for example an artist wanting to illustrate a piece with Maki Harukawa and taking inspiration from the fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood. The artist could choose to place a twist in which Maki is both Red Riding Hood and the hunter. We plan for Deadly Ever After to be a general fanzine, so we ask that romance isn't featured as the main theme in the pieces. You will definitely be able to focus on duos (e.g a Prince and a Princess) and even groups within your work but nothing should be explicitly romantic, i.e. kissing.Moderate amounts of gore (including blood, depictions of violence and death) and strong language will occasionally appear in this fanzine. Sexually explicit content will not be included.

FAQ

What is the specification of this project? This fanzine will be offered in a digital format as well as an A5 perfect-bound physical format with 100+ pages full of adventure and charm.** Who will you be featuring?**We are currently planning to feature a total of 45 contributors (37 artists and 8 authors). We will be offering various positions for contribution:
♠︎ Artists will be asked to illustrate a single page or spot illustrations to be featured within the fanzine.
♣︎ Authors will each be asked to contribute a short story with a maximum word count of 1,500. They are free to work in collaboration with illustrators who will create either a single page of art or spot illustrations for their stories.
♦︎ Authors are also free to contribute with 120-word entries that would accompany certain illustrations.
♥︎ One artist will be asked to illustrate the front and back design for the fanzine.
Please note that the number of these positions could either decrease or increase depending on the volume of applications and the interest that is shown. What are the entries? The entries are accompanying pieces to page illustrations. They will effectively be telling short narratives based upon the art pieces, using the artists’ pitch and/or interpretation as inspiration. EB’s accompanying entry for the Snow Drop in the Rappaccini's Compendium is a great example of what we are referring to when speaking of this. What are spot illustrations?Jessica Gray’s Alice in Wonderland Book Spot Illustrations, Bao Luu’s illustrations for Little Red Riding Hood, and Anastasia Nesterova’s personal book project - 'My Little Big Dragon' - are great examples of what we refer to when speaking of this.Which characters can I draw/write?You will be able to illustrate any character from Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, and Killing Harmony.Characters from the anime series and Ultra Despair Girls will be permitted to make minor appearances. We want to include as many characters as possible so to avoid repetition we’ll be limiting major character appearances to twice. However, for pieces that will feature a bigger cast, we will permit a few extra appearances. How will contributors be compensated? The funds of this project will be used to initially cover production costs and then to compensate contributors with their own copies of the fanzine. The remaining funds will then be split between the contributors and the mods.I want to apply for just merch. We’re looking for artists who would be interested in designing a piece of merch alongside their book illustration. Unfortunately, we are not currently offering the opportunity to apply for merch separately.I have another question that’s not been answered here. We'll be updating this page as we get questions but in the mean time please feel free to DM the Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr blogs, or to ask the CuriousCat or Tumblr ask box.
We’ll answer any questions that you may have!

Portfolio

Artists

  • When applying to our zine, the mods will require all artists to create an organised portfolio in the form of a google drive folder or a webpage like Wix.

  • Page artist: The portfolio should contain at least 3 illustrations and we ask that all of the pieces are fully finished with at least either a simple or fully coloured background.

  • Cover artist: The portfolio should contain at least 3 illustrations. We ask that all of the pieces are fully finished with at least either a simple or fully coloured background. At least 1 of the pieces must have a detailed background.

  • Spot illustrator: The portfolio should contain at least 3 illustrations. Pieces are not required to have a background.

  • Merch designer: This is not a separate position. The mods require at least 1 example of any previous work that has been done pertaining to merch designs. Preferentially for the specific merch designs wanting to contribute for the project.

  • We highly recommend including at least 1 Danganronpa related piece but it isn't a requirement for applying.

  • We’ll be assessing applications based upon various basic factors like anatomy, colour usage, composition, perspective, shading, posing, and background.

Authors

  • When applying to our zine, the mods will require authors to create an organised portfolio in the form of a google drive folder, an AO3 collection, or a link to a writing account.

  • Entries: The portfolio must include at least 3 examples each with a word count between 100 & 120 - we will permit around 15 words over this limit.

  • Excerpts from a chapter or a chapter from a multi-chaptered story that fit into the word count will be accepted, but at least one example must be a completed work.

  • We highly recommend including at least 1 Danganronpa related piece but it isn't a requirement for applying.

  • We’ll be assessing applications based upon various basic factors like the story structure, sentence variety, characterisation, and grammar.
